6 days, 5 nights

Lake Tahoe is the pearl of California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. The deepest alpine lake in the United States, its scenery, geography, and weather make the Lake Tahoe area the recreation spot of choice for the entire region.
We spend 6 days in the Tahoe area and enjoy a variety of activities including road biking, hiking, kayaking, whitewater river rafting, and mountain biking. The hiking takes place in the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range and the road biking is on paved, mostly flat paths along the shores of Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River. Lake Tahoe is perfect for kayaking, especially for beginners and the river rafting on the Truckee offers II and III class rapids. The mountain biking is a bit more challenging as we explore the forests above the lake. There is also a free afternoon where you can take advantage of a few optional activities like getting a massage or playing a round of golf.
Our accommodations and meals are excellent. We stay three nights at the resort in Squaw Valley, home to the 1960 winter Olympics, before moving locations to the west shore of Lake Tahoe. Our dinners are in a variety of upscale restaurants where creative menus are the norm.

Suggested Readings & Films
For a review of Tahoe's colorful pioneer history, try Sierra Stories: True Tales of Tahoe (volumes one and two), written by Mark McLaughlin. Rabbit Boss, written by Thomas Sanchez, is a fictional account of four generations of the Washoe Indians as they struggled to survive the coming of white settlers into the Tahoe area.
